Felix Mendelssohn |
Felix Mendelssohn werd geboren op 3 februari 1809 in
Hamburg in een rijke protestantse-joodse familie. In 1812
verhuisde de familie naar Berlijn. Als zesjarige kreeg hij
pianolessen, als 8 jarige kreeg hij reeds les in compositie.
Voordat hij 13 jaar was had hij reeds verscheidene composities
op zijn naam. Hij wordt nog steeds gezien als een grote Duitse
componist die uitzonderlijk begaafd was. In 1832 huwde hij
met Cécile Jeanrenaud en zij werden gezegend met vijf
kinderen: Carl, Marie, Paul, Felix en Lili. Hij overleed op
4 november 1847 in Leipzig, slechts 38 jaar oud.

In een van zijn composities, Sint-Paul, componeerde hij
op de bekering van Paulus als een allegorie op de bekering
van zijn eigen familie naar Luthernisme. Hij mengde dramatische
spanning met grootschalige koormuziek, symbool staande voor
zowel de blinde woede van de aanhangers van oude godenverering
en de overwinning van de aanhangers van het nieuwe geloof.
Het is hier in het tweede deel dat hij Gods naam gebruikt.
